Something happens

Defining what happens – a definitions of interaction design

Dan Saffer: I have a fairly expansive view of what interaction design is, which is that interaction design is about people: how people connect through products and services. Now, what does that mean?

Interaction design is about behavior, how things work. I push a button on my mobile phone and something happens. Or I enter a fast food restaurant, walk up to the counter, and something happens. Defining what happens when a person uses a product or service is what interaction designers do.

Balldroppings is a visual sound experiment where lines stop the drop of balls and create various sounds in the process. Have fun – I did.

renaissance pixel type

typography.com:

The struggle to adequately render letterforms on a pixel grid is a familiar one, and an ancient one as well: this bitmap alphabet is from La Vera Perfettione del Disegno di varie sorte di ricami, an embroidery guide by Giovanni Ostaus published in 1567.

Renaissance ‘lace books’ have much to offer the modern digital designer, who also faces the challenge of portraying clear and replicable images in a constrained environment. Ostaus’s alphabet follows the cardinal rule of bitmaps, which is to always reckon the height of a capital letter on an odd number of pixels. (Try drawing a capital E on both a 5×5 grid and a 6×6, and you’ll see.) Ostaus ignored the second rule, however, which is “leave space for descenders.”

You can even see the iron left on the window sill. Too much detail for my liking.

“Climate Change – a Communication and Design Objective”.

Dr. Reusswig firmly believes that the only way of making this extremely abstract topic clear in the minds of consumers and the general public is visualisation.

From his point of view, as sociologist and researcher into climate impact, he talked about the change required in society to protect the climate, how this can be achieved and the responsibility of designers in this context.

Reusswig has worked for more than 20 years in environmental research. He is head of the “Consumer and Lifestyle Research” department at PIK. His research interests include areas such as the development of the climate discourse in society and the introduction of socio-technical experiments for climate protection.
